CNMO learned from Japanese media that research firm IDC recently released data on the Japanese smartphone market and shipments of various manufacturers in the second quarter of 2024. Japanese media said that Google’s Pixel smartphone market share had been growing rapidly before last year, but its shipments fell by nearly 50% in the second quarter of this year. This may be due to the slowdown in momentum caused by the “fire sale” of operators such as Pixel 6a. In addition to Google, Samsung’s market share also fell slightly.

Xiaomi, a Chinese brand, was the opposite. Its shipments increased by 464%, and its market share jumped from 1% to 7%, an increase of 6 percentage points. Japanese media analysis said that Xiaomi 13T/13T Pro, Redmi Note 13 series and entry-level model Redmi 12 5G may have made great contributions to the expansion of market share.

The market share of AQUOS phones from Japanese local brand Sharp has been increasing significantly, which may be due to the fairly low prices of AQUOS Wish 2 and Wish 3, which boosted sales.

In addition, Sony’s Xperia mobile phone was “out” again and was included in the “Others” camp. Japanese media said that this may be because Sony did not have any well-selling mid-range or entry-level models in that quarter.

Japanese media concluded that Sharp’s AQUOS and Xiaomi/Redmi have taken away market share from brands including Google Pixel and Sony Xperia.
