ARM Technology releases its first “Linglong” DPU and new generation VPU to fully upgrade the experience

On September 19, ARM Technology (China) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “ARM Technology”) officially launched the first domestically developed “Linglong” D8/D6/D2 display processor and the new generation of “Linglong” V510/V710 video processor. The newly launched processors will meet the performance and power consumption configuration requirements of diversified intelligent application scenarios, helping domestic chip manufacturers to achieve innovative leaps in the field of multimedia technology.

Liu Hao, vice president of product development at Arm Technology, said: “At present, the integration of digital multimedia technology based on video images with various fields is accelerating, which has spawned many new business forms and new applications with higher intelligence and smoother human-computer interaction. With the support of ‘Linglong’ D8/D6/D2 DPU and ‘Linglong’ V510/V710 VPU, Arm Technology will provide better and richer multimedia solutions for the ever-increasing high-definition display and high-definition video encoding and decoding needs of the mainstream market, and cooperate with self-developed computing units such as NPU, CPU and SPU to lay a solid foundation for the core technology of domestic semiconductor manufacturers.

Compared with the previous generation Arm Mali-D71/D51/D37 DPU, the new “Linglong” D8/D6/D2 DPU has achieved a two-fold improvement in core performance. Specifically, its single-core performance has been increased from the original maximum supported 4K120 frames per second to 8K60 frames per second, and the real-time display output supported has been expanded from 2 to 4 channels, fully meeting the diversified display needs of smart application scenarios.

In order to cope with the challenges of mass information transmission and storage brought about by the popularization of high-definition video technology, the industry’s latest international video coding standard H.266 can improve the compression efficiency of 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition videos. With the same image quality, H.266 can save about 50% of traffic compared with the previous generation standard, and the transmission and storage costs of high-definition videos can be significantly reduced.

As the first batch of encoding and decoding video processors in China that support the H.266 standard at the same time, the Linglong V510/V710 VPU adopts a programmable processing architecture that integrates multi-core and multi-format encoding and decoding. The encoding or decoding performance of a single core can reach 4K60 frames per second. According to the needs of different scenarios such as end, edge, and cloud, it provides 1-4 cores, 4-8 cores and other configurations. While greatly saving storage space and bandwidth costs, the Linglong V510/V710 VPU can also be easily configured on demand to ensure the best balance between system performance, power consumption and area.

Compared with the previous generation “Linglong” V6/V8 VPU, the new generation “Linglong” V510/V710 VPU has doubled the encoding and decoding performance, and the encoding quality in 4K/8K application scenarios can be improved by more than 25%. In particular, the screen display menu OSD pre-processing function has been added to better take into account the real-time encoding and decoding needs of mainstream markets and emerging applications. In addition, in order to help developers quickly deploy based on various video encoding and decoding standards, the “Linglong” V510/V710 VPU also provides a complete set of firmware tools and software support. With the architectural design of software and hardware interaction, developers can also flexibly expand and optimize existing hardware through software upgrades in the future.

After three years of iteration and optimization, the “Linglong” VPU has been authorized to more than 30 domestic partners and is widely used in many video application scenarios such as mobile terminals, PCs, smart cars, and smart security. In the future, Arm’s “Linglong” product line will continue to strengthen its multimedia technology stack, while integrating advanced AI processing units, striving to play a higher-level intelligent imaging “core” role in AI mobile phones, AI PCs, smart cars, data centers and other fields.
