Agency: Apple’s A18 processor is only slightly better than A17, and the performance upgrade is not significant

On September 13, Techinsight published an article stating that although Apple emphasized that the A18 processor has a 30% performance improvement over the A16, Apple ignored the fact that the specifications between the A17 Pro and the newly launched A18 and A18 Pro are very similar, and the year-on-year improvement is only slightly improved.

Compared to the A17 Pro, the main differences of the A18 processor are the newer TSMC 3nm process, a minor update to the ARM instruction set, slightly faster memory, and a lower GPU core count. What these 3nm chipsets have in common is the ability to run Apple Intelligence. While the minimum hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence are mainly related to DRAM density, the performance of the application processor, especially the NPU, is important to ensure a good user experience.

The iPhone 16 series will be available for pre-sale at 8pm tonight. Before the official sale, the Geekbench score of the iPhone 16 Pro has been exposed in advance. Some foreign media said that the performance of the iPhone 16 Pro is disappointing.

According to the relevant Geekbench page, the device’s identifier is 17.3. Based on this identifier, this device is believed to be the iPhone 16 Pro, which achieved scores of 3114 and 6666 in the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench 6 respectively.

For reference, last year’s iPhone 15 Pro, which was equipped with a more powerful A17 Pro chip, scored about 2900 and 7440 in the same test. This also proves that the performance upgrade of the iPhone 16 Pro is not significant.
