Foreign media said that iOS 18 Repair Assistant forces users to pair parts

Apple is about to launch a new tool called Repair Assistant in iOS 18, which can help users correctly configure newly purchased or second-hand Apple original accessories. For example, when you need to replace a broken screen or replace an old battery with an official new part or recycled parts, you can use Repair Assistant to get it done without having to contact Apple customer service. This process is usually called “parts matching” and allows you to get the best performance from the new parts you replace.

For example, if you replace your iPhone’s screen and don’t configure it properly, useful features like True Tone and automatic brightness may not work. With Repair Assistant, you can make sure these features are turned on and working properly.

Once iOS 18 detects that there are replaced parts in your iPhone, Repair Assistant will pop up and prompt you or the service personnel who repaired the phone to configure these parts to ensure that the repair is completed smoothly. This not only protects the privacy and security of users, but also ensures that the performance of the repaired iPhone is as good as before.

Interestingly, even if you use a third-party battery instead of an original Apple battery, Repair Assistant can help you set it up to look like the original one, but it’s unclear whether other third-party accessories can be set up in the same way.

Of course, this has also caused some concerns. Repair Assistant may pop up a reminder for repairs that use non-original parts; or when you buy a second-hand iPhone but don’t know what repairs the phone has had before, Repair Assistant may also prompt you. According to AppleInsider, Apple will release a detailed help page explaining the use of this new feature on Monday, September 16, that is, after iOS 18 is officially launched.
