iQOO 5 Pro designer Li Mengjie: Design serves the experience and only by giving up can you gain

On the afternoon of September 11, iQOO held the “iQOO Racing Open Day” event at Beijing Goldenport International Circuit. At the event, the iQOO BMW M4 DTM show car made a stunning appearance. In addition to the exciting test ride, this open day also provided guests and media with a more in-depth interpretation of the design ideas and product positioning of the iQOO 5 Pro series. Product designer Li Mengjie shared the story behind the design of the iQOO 5 Pro on site.

iQOO 5 Pro has two versions this time, the “Track Edition” and the “Legend Edition”. The avant-garde design not only retains the family’s genes, but also keeps pace with the times and further enhances the brand’s design capabilities. In the display area outside the venue, there are 10 mobile phone back covers. Li Mengjie introduced that these models are all “proofing” during the design process. It was found by colleagues who arranged the event site, and colleagues in the product group said: Why did the design that looks quite good still get eliminated in the end?

“Gain and loss” is the core design concept of the iQOO 5 series. As a new mobile phone brand, iQOO’s target users are a group of people who are keen on exploration, love to experience different things, are low-key in appearance, and strong in heart, which is also the origin of the brand “Monster Inside”. In the first generation of iQOO mobile phones, centered around the e-sports scene, it adopted “Speed Art” as the core of the design, combined with sports car waistline, pressure bar shoulder keys and other elements, to strengthen the impression of the new phone in the minds of users.

The design of iQOO 3 is still based on the “e-sports” scene, but at the same time, we also hope to create a different feeling. Therefore, iQOO 3 adopts the cutting edge design on the top and bottom sides. The rounded corners of the body and the curve of the back are all for the sense of control. For a group of users who pursue the ultimate experience, the improvement of the feel is as important as the performance.

Now it is 2020, and the iQOO 5 series is like an excellent sports car. While having a fast experience, iQOO also hopes to bring users a “sense of control”. Therefore, the “SENSE OF CONTROL” design language came into being. Some people may question why the light strips and shoulder keys disappeared? In fact, a more textured and more popular design language is what iQOO users are pursuing today. Between “giving up and getting”, the iQOO 5 series has achieved an improvement in texture, and at the same time it is more restrained.

The birth process of the white version of iQOO 5 Pro, the “Legendary Edition”, was very bumpy. Li Mengjie said that when suppliers heard about “white leather”, they all refused. This kind of product with complex process and low yield is indeed a bit “thankless”. But in the end, after repeated attempts and efforts to find a combination of different process materials, iQOO 5 Pro finally did it. Moreover, it not only has a very warm and smooth feel, but also guarantees a certain degree of anti-fouling performance.

As for the “track version”, it adopts the design of “passive light effect”. The glass with AG+ gradient polishing process creates an unprecedented sense of speed. Due to the increasing number of internal components of mobile phones today, independent light strips have to be abandoned. But iQOO did not give up, but superimposed three layers of color and texture under a piece of glass to bring the feeling of these two rays of light.

But this process also has three difficulties. One is that the three layers mentioned above need to be aligned very accurately to control their tolerances to achieve the feeling of two rays of light. In addition, the two blue rays need to have a very natural transition with the Kevlar texture so that the two rays of light do not feel abrupt. The third difficulty is mass production, which also requires certain skills from the workers. After overcoming these three points, the “track version” was finally created with its breathtaking and dreamy self-luminous texture.

“Design serves the experience” is the principle that the iQOO design team has always adhered to. In addition to the shell craftsmanship mentioned above, iQOO 5 Pro also maximizes the experience of holding and controlling. In the small body, a 5G module, a 120W ultra-fast flash charging module, and a heat dissipation module with a total area of 14,581 square millimeters are placed. The ultimate body design and internal stacking process make iQOO 5 Pro worthy of the title of top flagship.

In addition, iQOO 5 Pro also has Samsung’s hyperbolic flexible screen, Snapdragon 865 processor, and excellent iQOO UI. The all-round top experience without shortcomings has created this top flagship with both speed and control. In fact, for users of the iQOO series, their needs are never static. The “gains and losses” and “gains and losses” in design are actually relative. For the independent iQOO mobile phone, gaming is just one of its advantages. A more comprehensive and popular design. At the same time, a more personal design is what iQOO needs more. And these are vividly reflected in the iQOO 5 Pro.
